AREA SUPERVISOR’S REPORT

CAPE BRETON HIGHLAND REGION

CHRIS HOLLAND

October 19, 2001

As we prepare for a long basketball season ahead, the local and Provincial Executive have been busy working together for development in addition to the administration efforts required to run a professional organization.

In the Cape Breton Highland region, we have implemented and continued several programs directly aimed at the development of both new and senior officials. Once again, we are conducting our “Intra-Provincial” program in which we send several officials to the mainland, specifically Halifax-Metro, and pay for the costs associated with this event. This is to create a “Provincial Tournament” weekend atmosphere where basketball and officiating is the sole purpose of the trip. These officials, ranging in age and experience, will work with a variety of experienced Halifax officials to promote a greater degree of consistency from one end of the Province to the other. In return, game fees will go directly to our area, but our local association covers all expenses.

As well, we have arranged for Reg Jewkes to come to Sydney and perform evaluations on as many officials as possible with the tentative weekend date set for November 16th and to coincide with the Glace Bay Division I Girls tournament. In addition to these evaluations, both Jim Martin and Chris Holland will continue to conduct local evaluations and are committed to providing all officials in our area with a minimum of one formal evaluation per year.

We held our annual clinic and mechanics review at BEC this year on October 14th and we had an excellent turnout with 22 officials attending. It was great to see five new female officials added to our numbers this year as this brings our total to eight out of thirty-seven officials in our area. Also scheduled later in the year is a “Round Table” rules review on the last Sunday in November and the last Sunday in January (before the exam and before Regionals).

Lastly, I would like to thank all the applicants for the Assignors positions that we had this year. We always encourage and like to see our membership wanting to take an active role in our organizations. Congratulations to Jim Martin for being selected once again as our Senior Assignor and Jerry Ryan for the Junior Assignor roles. As well, Gary Burke as our Treasurer and Sandy Kearney as our Secretary. We look forward to the continued support from these positions.

Any officials coming to our area are welcome to do games. Please call in advance to arrange for assignments. Please contact Chris Holland at 539-8415.

Respectfully submitted,

Christopher Holland
