Men's & Women’ College Commissioners Report
May 2005
I have been in this position for less than a year but our first season together is completed. The season was very successful from my point of view and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those involved in making it such a success. The following is a status report on how we are progressing with the women’s AUS since last fall:
· AUS Women’s and Men’s Board under evaluation for 2006/07 season.
· September 2005 AUS Women exhibition and regular games assigned until Christmas ( done jointly with Men’s Commissioner) final assignments made as well.
· AUS Women’s Championships Assigned by assigner. NS had two participants, Jon Hunt and Manny States. Mr. Hunt did the final.
· CIS Women’s Championships were assigned and NS was represented by Jon Hunt. Congratulations to Jon on his evaluation and being assigned the final game.
· Written evaluations completed.
· AUS Women’s assignment quota for female assignments at 25% was met.
I hope that we will have a very exciting and successful season next year. I am looking forward to seeing all of our board members in action . We have an excellent board of officials and it is my goals as well as the goal of the NSBO to develop young and up coming officials and use the knowledge and experience of our senior officials.
We are looking at various ways of developing our young officials and our female members as well. If any members have ideas on how we can better approach these goals please do not hesitate in contacting me. Have a great summer and I look forward to next year.

AUS Men’s Commissioner’s Year End Report
May 7, 2006
The year began with our first ever AUS Clinic. I feel this was an important beginning to what appears to have been a very successful first term as AUS Commissioner. It is my belief that through the clinic we were able to get most of our officials on the same page. All officials attending heard first hand the same message. Certainly the senior officials that participated as presenters did a magnificent job.
During October the meeting with the Athletic Directors was a positive step in developing a good working relationship. The athletic directors and coaches were pleased to be able to see the expectations for our board and also to get a complete list of officials working the games at each school. Providing the coaches with an avenue for open dialogue and feedback on their games in the form of game reports and email has been an excellent communication tool. For the most part coaches have been professional with their comments in regards to officiating and officials.
Our panel worked extremely hard to meet the expectations set out for the 2005-06 season. We did have a few bumps along the way but certainly nothing that major. The goal of zero tolerance with unacceptable behavior by players was handled extremely well this year. We made positive gains with coaches conduct however we still have work to do in this area. The hard work and professionalism demonstrated by the majority of our AUS panel officials has been outstanding. It is my opinion that our officials are among the top in the country in this area. Certainly the crew chiefs played a significant role in this process; mentoring by example!! When you have the senior members setting a positive tone it promotes the process. The pre-game and post-game conferences were handled effectively and helped improve our performance throughout the year.
There are a number of issues that have arisen this year with CIS officiating which need to be deal with by CABO. I am pleased to announce that our board is not involved in any of these issues! Thank you to all officials for their commitment to following the rules and mechanics as provided in our manuals.
In conclusion I would like to congratulate Roger Caulfield for his success at the CIS Men’s Tournament. Roger worked a semi final and the Bronze Medal game where he performed brilliantly. Looking at the success Roger has had in his officiating career (National and International) it is hard to argue that he has been one of the outstanding referees in Canada. He has represented our board with class, skill and professionalism over the years and set the bench mark for other officials to strive for.
Jon Hunt also had a tremendous outing at the CIS Women’s National Tournament. He worked a semi final and the Gold Medal game. Jon’s evaluation for this tournament was outstanding.
Reg Caulfield and Brian States had a strong showing at the AUS Men’s and Women’s tournaments. Reg was selected to be the stand-by official for the Championship Game and those of us who attended knows that he was at the top of his game and represented our board admirably. Brain officiated well at the women’s tournament and received a very positive assessment for Rob Anderson. Congratulations to all of these officials for a job well done!
I firmly believe that our panel has had an excellent year. I would like to thank all of the officials for their commitment and support throughout the season.
Thanks to Paul Hanson for handling the financial side of the AUS. His expertise in this area was most helpful in getting bills submitted and money to officials. Having Paul post AUS information on the web site has become a valuable communication tool for the board. He should be commended for his leadership in this area.
