AUS Men’s Commissioner’s Report
September 23, 2007 – Halifax, Nova Scotia
The upcoming year will be a challenge for all of us. The implementation of the FIBA rules will prove to be a huge adjustment for the AUS coaches whom for the most part have had a love affair with the CIS rules for as long as we can remember.
It will be imperative for each official to gain a complete knowledge and understanding of these rules. Coaches will be looking for us to officiate and education them until the rules are established. This is a time for us to be knowledgeable and consistent as we establish a new style of play. With the exit of the imaginary cylinder the play above the rim should add an air of excitement to the game.
The games will be faster with the 8 second and 24 second time clock rules. The games will also be somewhat longer with four 10 minute quarters. These rule differences will increase the demand for all officials to maintain a high level of fitness.
We have an excellent blend of experienced, young and upcoming officials for this year’s board. Please refer to our NSBO Web-site to see the AUS panel for 2007-08.
On a final note, one of our leaders and most experienced official (Roger Caulfield) has requested a year’s leave of absence to heal some nagging injuries that have plagued him over the past two seasons. We wish Roger a restful season and look forward to his return to action next year.
