Rules Review
Learning rules is an ongoing process.
1. Technical fouls do not involve contact.
2. The 8-second count states: the ball must be within the front court within 8 seconds.
3.Ball hitting behind the back board is out of play.
4. If an injured player is subbed, this creates a subbing opportunity for both teams.
5. If a team starts a quarter in the wrong direction, the official should correct it immediately and place the ball in the proper court. No resetting of game clock.
6. Never shoot double fouls.
7. Shot for goal ends when it hits the rim.
8. Cancelling fouls must be cancelled in the order that they are called.
9. It is permissible to dribble after shooting an air ball.
10. Game clock starts when the ball is touched by a player on the floor.
11. A straddled throw-in on the centre line is thrown out of bounds. Other team throws the ball in from a straddled position.
12. Penalties of equal gravity that involve cancellation will see the ball returned to the team that was entitled to the ball a throw in at the place nearest to the infraction. If cancellations are involved in coaches or substitutes, the ball goes to the entitled team at center court - center line extended opposite the scorer's table. On a double foul, cancel the fouls and the ball is returned to the team that was entitled to the ball at the throw in place nearest the infraction.
13. An airborne player on a new possession catches the ball straddling, he or she cannot dribble while straddling. (but you could lift your back foot and dribble in the front court)
14.Technical commissioners cannot change calls.
15. Delaying subbing for a disqualified player can result in a team being charged a time out.
16. Interval fouls are charged to individuals and count towards penalty and disqualification.
17. Assistant coaches are allowed to ask for time-outs.
18. Officials can correct a two-point versus a three-point basket until the score sheet is signed.
19. TV equipment can only be used to decide if the last shot of any period was released during playing time.
20. A throw-in cannot be tied up for a jump ball until the throw-in is completely inbounded. Defender must give a meter on throw in.
21. Team loses points if the wrong player shoots free throws. (But not possession. If no possession is involved, the ball is put in place at the free throw line extended.)
22. If a player gets two unsportsmanlike fouls, and is removed from the game, they are still allowed to remain on the bench. Of course if any of those fouls are flagrant then they are not.
23. A defender does not have to give a moving opponent with the ball any time or distance when covering him.
24. Violations by the offensive team of the free thrower - opponent has throw in at free throw line extended. Double lane violations go to the arrow and are administered on the end line.
25. Double lane violation involving the free throw shooter - free throw shooter violation takes precedence.
26. Possession resulting from technical fouls or unsportsmanlike fouls never cause a change in the possession arrow.
27. At the end of the game all free throws are shot regardless of the score.
28. If an injury occurs during free throws, allow the sub.
29. If a tangled net interrupts the progress of play, stop the game and fix it without putting either team at a disadvantage.
30. If a throw in goes through the basket, take the ball at the free throw line extended.
31. A made basket must stay in the basket or pass through the basket to be considered made. The ball is considered to be in the basket when the slightest part of the ball is below the level of the rim.
32. If A1 and B1 are fighting for control of the ball and if one of the players is touching the sideline, they are out of bounds. If the tie up occurs before the out of bounds, then it is a jump ball.
33. Alternating possession out of bounds is lost on a violation but not on a foul.
