**Bad calls result from bad positioning!**
1. The foul calling official becomes the trail official.
2. During free throws the lead is tableside. (FIBA Experimental)
3. During Free throws the reporting official becomes the trail opposite the table. (FIBA Experimental)
4. There is no prescribed diagonal. Always administer your own sidelines on throw ins in the front court. Throw ins and free throws dictates positioning. (new - when there is no pressure in the backcourt the trail may bounce the ball across to the player and not force a switch)
5. The lead official is responsible for the end line and the nearest sideline.
6. The trail official is responsible for the centre line and the nearest sideline.
7. The lead moves from the three point line to the far lane line. Usually the lead's initial setup position is the corner of the trapezoid opposite the trail official. The lead moves to ball side when the ball is in the low post or inside the arc with activity in the low post.
8. On all offensive end throwins, the lead official will hand the ball to the thrower in with backside to the glass. This may require a switching of position by the trail official
9. When the trail administers the end line going in the opposite direction, he/she may bounce the ball to the player and keep the same diagonal with the lead. With pressure, hand the ball and this may cause a switch for the trail.
10. The lead is responsible for the offensive throw in on the sideline to his/her left or right. Below the free throw line extended to the endline, he/she may bounce the ball. If the throw in is above the free throw line extended, the trail will administer it.
11. The lead must signal the three point attempt from rectangle four, the trail also mirrors it.
12. On a double whistle in the paint, the lead will report the foul unless the trail is closer or the play is moving in the trail's direction.(avoid "blarge")
13. The trail official should work inside out when the ball is close to the sideline in rectangle six.
14. Violations are administered at the nearest spot except if the basket is cancelled - throw in then will be taken at the free throw line extended.
15. The timeout positions are at the far side line across the floor(one on either side of the centre line). The official nearest the scorer's table handles the timeout. At the conclusion of the 50 seconds, the horn will sound and the official blows his/her whistle to resume play. Officials return to their proper positions. Players are not permitted to return to the court before these signals.
16. Use the cross arm signal to initiate the substitution, then beckon the sub(s) to enter the court.
17. Use a 30 second warning buzzer before the start of each quarter and a 90 second warning buzzer to start the game.
18. Side line throw ins can either be administered by a bounce pass or handed to the player.
19. On free throws the lead official will administer all free throws. Use a bounce pass. Also, observe opposite lane. The trail observes the opposite lane plus the shooter. The lead may not stand in the lane when there is no rebounding action.
20. Trail official needs to work to his right when the ball is in box three.
21. Trail officials need to pinch in to foul line extended on penetration.
22. Trail the dribbler as the trail official.
23. Use FIBA foul signals when reporting to the table and follow the proper sequence. Stop when reporting.
24. Stop clock signal must be used on all violations and out of bounds calls.
25. Technical fouls - calling official will go to center court opposite the table and the lead will handle both shots. Administer the throw in with the player straddling the centre line.
26. Trail official is responsible for the last shot.
27. The trail needs to step down on all shots.
28. The new trail official chops in time when the clock has been stopped in the last two minutes.
29. Remember the lead has coverage in rectangle 4 and 5 plus is responsible for rectangle six when the ball is in the low post area or if the player is moving towards the basket on a drive.
30. The trail signals all successful 2 point baskets.
31. A whistle is required for all substitution situations.
32. "Birddogging" is an acceptable mechanic.
33. Shot- , then shot clock sounds, and ball misses rim and hits floor- endline throw in.
34. Do not handle defensive basket interference unless you need clarity.
35. Any violation or foul in the key- is taken on endline - just outside the back board on the appropriate side. Lane violations on free throws are taken out at the free throw line extended.
36. Calls in top half of circle in FIBA- nearest side line.
37. After showing the number of free throw shots, drop your hands prior to the shot. No visual count is required.
38. Disqualified player must be substituted within 30 seconds. Request the sub with 10 seconds remaining. No buzzer required and go to regular positions.
39. A 8 or 10 second back court count is counted using one finger or the full hand.
40. The signal is a clenched fist pointing to the direction of the basket of the team committing a control foul. Remember to raise your hand first. The signal for reporting a charging foul with the ball is a closed fist striking the hand. This is done during reporting and not at the site of the foul.
41. Huddling of players is highly discouraged - Keep the game moving!
42. Calling a 5th foul is reported to the coach by the non calling official. The calling official becomes the trail official.
43. No whistle is required for putting the ball in play after a time out.
44. The calling official reports the foul and also handles the called time out.
45. It is not necessary to use a preliminary signal at the site of the foul unless it is a charge or block situation.(unless selling a call is necessary)
48. Use a 24 second rest signal anytime the shot clock is to be reset - no matter if it is to 14 seconds or a full reset.
