METRO AREA BASKETBALL OFFICIALS

ANNUAL REPORT – May, 2006         Submitted by: Nick Morash, Area Supervisor    

MABO had a very busy year in 2005-2006. Total membership was down slightly to 105 officials including 21 newcomers, many of whom have shown great promise for the future. These new officials qualified through our 4-week certification process followed by the mechanics schools. MABO organized a very successful Fall Clinic on November 7th that was conducted by our own senior officials. For the first time meetings and clinics were mandatory for all Pre-Level 1 officials which improved attendance significantly. To continue the emphasis on development, we again utilized the position of Minor Supervisor whose responsibility was to be a presence at MBA basketball games and to evaluate P-1’s.

A large part of the MABO Supervisor’s job required dealing with player and/or coach ejections, along with numerous other complaints. This year there were no less than 25 incidents which required attention and subsequent ejection. Unfortunately, one MABO official received a 1-week sanction for unprofessional behavior.

On the positive side, MABO had 12 members selected to work at the 2006 NSSAF Championships and David Bezanson also earned his Level 1 certification. Recognition goes to Jon Hunt for his FIBA assignment to Turkey and the CIS Women’s championships in Fredericton, to Paul Hanson for the CCAA Men’s championships, and to Brian States for his selection to the Canada Games. Officiating at the ACAA championships in Halifax were Paul Hanson, Dave MacGrattan and Wendell Skeir.
