PRESIDENT’S REPORT

May 7, 2006

The past season has been one of relative ease for NSBO despite the many trials and tribulations each official faces as they head out to do their job.

As I sit and ponder the past season, I can’t recall any in my 10-years that has gone as smoothly.

The people who represent each of their regions and the members of the executive have taken on the responsibility of ensuring the continued professionalism of NSBO. I believe this had led us to where we are today.

For the most part officials have bought into what we are trying to achieve and through our enhanced relationships with NSSAF, BNS, AUS and the ACAA, we have made great strides in providing service to these organizations. You have all gone beyond the call of duty in that regard and each member of NSBO should be proud of their respective accomplishments.

We have many tough decisions to make this weekend as we continue to strive towards making NSBO stronger. That being said, there are many people who are sitting around this table and in each of the regions of Nova Scotia that care about the product we put on the floor at all levels.

This speaks volumes for where we are at today and where we are going in the future.

I would like to acknowledge four of those people who are leaving us effective May 7. Nick Morash in MABO, Gary Mason in South Shore, Fred Hampton in Pictou County and Sandy Kearney in Cape Breton. I would like to thank each of you for your countless hours that you have worked on behalf of officials in your region. The responsibility you showed to a volunteer position is tremendous.

I would also like to acknowledge several award winners, two of which were presented at the BNS brunch that was attended by 10-members of NSBO during the CIS championship weekend.

At this event, Jeff Starratt was presented with the Rod Shovellor award as one of NSBO’s top up and coming officials. Reg Caulfield was presented with the Frank Baldwin Award that goes for dedicated service over a long period to NSBO and the game of basketball.

I would also like to acknowledge Ted Veinot of the South Shore area who has just completed his 25th year of officiating. Ted will receive his award at the Fall 2006 AGM.
