METRO AREA BASKETBALL OFFICIALS

ANNUAL REPORT – April, 2004

MABO had another successful year in 2003-2004. Our membership continues to remain steady around the 120 mark with a fairly large turnover of officials each year. All newcomers continued to qualify through our 4-week certification process which included the mechanics schools. Congratulations to Matt Boyle, David Chiu, Joel Leger, Sam Smith, and Darren Webster for successfully obtaining their Level 1 certification. MABO also had 17 members selected to work at the 2004 NSSAF Championships.

MABO conducted its second Pre-Level 1 Clinic over the Christmas holidays. It is our intention to continue with this venture and make it mandatory for all Pre-Level 1 officials. We also ran a successful Mentor Program in which senior officials were each responsible for mentoring a junior counterpart.

Again this year, a large part of the MABO Supervisor’s job required dealing with the reporting of no less than 20 player and/or coach ejections. All of these, along with numerous complaints from and about coaches, players, fans, and officials had to be followed up and resolved in a timely manner. Unfortunately, these situations continue to arise and occupy far too much of the Supervisor’s time.

Supervising an area as large as Metro would not be possible without the contributions of many. Special thanks to all and in particular;

Russ Boyle - Assignor

Angela Weld - Registrar

Greg Parsons - Certification clinics

Paul Debelie - Referee schools, MABO party host

Larry Collins - Area meeting attendance manager

Bruce Duffy - ACAA Coordinator, Pre-Level 1 Clinic

Wendell Skeir - New officials mentor program

Jon Hunt - MABO Executive member, NSBO President

Wayne Shipley, Ted Wallace, Wendell Skeir, Don Laviolette - Evaluators

Congratulations to Jon Hunt for his assignment to the CIS Womens championships in Winnipeg, and to Ted Wallace for his assignment to the CCAA Mens in Kamloops, B.C. Also, congrats are in order for Paul Hanson, Wendell Skeir, Brian States and Ted Wallace for their appointments to the ACAA Mens/Womens Championships in Truro.

Congratulations also to members receiving awards;
