NOVA SCOTIA SUPERVISOR'S REPORT
SPRING MEETING
May 15, 2005
OPENING REMARKS
NSBO continues to enjoy the benefits of strong communications. Officials throughout our province are much more informed of policies, regulations, processes and decisions made within the organization. Our goal has been to manage an organization that is based on openness and integrity. This has been supported through a strong communication strategy. A number of our members have played a major role in the support and development of a working environment that promotes strong communications and sharing of information among its members.
CONTRACT – AUS PLAY-OFFS:
Many hours of negotiations transpired before an agreement on a final proposal could be reached. Chairperson, John Walsh, Nfld’s Provincial Supervisor, must be commended for his tremendous effort in coordinating this initiative among the Provincial Supervisors and the AUS Representative, Jack Drover (not an easy task). One of the major successes in the negotiation process has been the approval of three-person crews for the AUS women's play-offs. The final proposal will be presented to the membership during the spring meeting.
ZERO TOLERANCE:
As always, we continue to deal with the subject of zero tolerance on an ongoing basis. This past basketball season has seen a number of administrative investigations (both formal and information) completed due to a number of incidents where we did not always demonstrate a high standard of professionalism and maturity during our interaction with our clients, the public and one another. I cannot stress the important of zero tolerance enough. Without restraint, parameters, discipline and respect in our day to day dealings with people, we risk loosing ground and being viewed as an organization without professionalism, standards and accountability.
CABO:
One of the major issues for the CABO Executive over the past months has been their involvement with Canada Basketball and the decision to move the country to one set of unified rules and the CB position that those rules will be FIBA. We are currently awaiting additional information concerning the time frame and proposed strategy for the provinces to implement these rules. Obviously, this will be a challenge for our organization and we will require the support of all members during the implementation phase.
Canada Basketball has also made a partnership proposal to CABO and they will be discussing and refining this proposal at their next "face to face" meeting in late May.
NSBO is planning to host the CABO AGM in 2005. Further details will be communicated to members as they are confirmed.
LEVEL II CERTIFICATION:
Congratulations to Erin Schaus, Duncan Milne, Larry MacKenzie and Ryan Lutes on being certified as Level II officials. Each of these officials has fulfilled their responsibilities and is encouraged to seek out opportunities at the next level of officiating.

Note: The Selection Committee for national assignments consists of: Provincial Supervisor, Reg Caulfield, Provincial Assessor, Reg Jewkes, and Member at large, John Fanning. CONCLUSION:
Thanks to the members of the Executive for their ongoing commitment, diligence and tremendous team work. I would like to personally thank Jon Hunt for his effective leadership and his countless hours of work as President of NSBO. His contribution has made a considerable difference in improving our communication with clients and promoting the organization’s openness and integrity.
Of equal importance is the contribution of Ted Wallace as the College Women’s Commissioner. His ability to ensure our organization provided a quality service to our clients has been a positive reflection on us all. It is a pleasure to serve with such a dedicated and professional person. Job well done Ted! Good luck in future endeavors.
