Vice President's Report
For NSBO Annual General Meeting
April 27, 2003
This basketball season proved once again to be learning experience for me. The
opportunities presented to me after assuming this office was valuable in helping
to better understand the complexities and diversity of a board such as NSBO.
The variety of duties that come with this office includes dealing with
discipline, chairing the awards committee, and taking part in various
committees. There were several highlights to my season including:
- Currently working on rates from NSSAF, ACAA, BNS
- Preparing recommendations for awards for the fall meeting
- Finalizing the criteria for awards
- Member of the three-person committee that selected officials
for the NSSAF tournaments.
Looking back on the 2002-03-basketball season, I would have to say I'm luckier
than my predecessors in the vice president's chair. Through the great work of
the provincial executive, area supervisors and each and every official in the
province, there was not one issue of a disciplinary nature for me to deal with.
I applaud each of you for that and would ask all of you to continue this level
of professionalism each and every season. The one case that had to be
dealt with concerning an official in Valley West was turned over to Basketball
Nova Scotia. They serve as our appeals board and to my knowledge this has been
dealt with. On the awards front, many of you will find our rules and
regulations were vague as to what criteria was in place for each of the awards
we support each year. I spent a great deal of time
on this issue after determining a full set of criteria should be created This
would allow our membership the opportunity to fully understand the criteria and
the thought process behind the committee's selection. I would hope the
document I have provided to the board is appropriate and would be used as a base
point for determining awards, prizes and service documents pending their
approval by our membership. Until this past season I had no idea how much
work went into
getting officials to NSSAF tournaments. It's not as simple as just applying and
going to the tournament as I found out through numerous calls with committee
members Reg Jewkes and Jon Hunt. After many hours of consultations
officials were assigned to all eight tournaments. I would be remiss if I didn't
thank both of
them for having a vision and sticking to it. It has always been my goal to
help foster NSBO's growth and with that in mind, I will be re-offering for the
office of vice
president.
Respectfully submitted
